They're not really. Their mother is I believe which allows him to compete for Sweden. He made that decision early in his career because he would not have made the US team at that point. Now he can't switch teams.

Anyone know why he chose to compete for Sweden over the US? Money?

See post above.

He had a chance to compete for them internationally before he could compete for the US. Now he can't switch teams.

Easier to qualify for Olympics, I believe. Less competition to make the team

From New York Slimes
quote:

Sweden, along with many countries, has a more forgiving Olympic selection process that is not determined by a single trials performance. A number of top American vaulters have been left heartbroken by a disappointing performance at the trials. Famously, the decathlete Dan O’Brien, who was an Olympic gold-medal favorite in 1992, failed to qualify for the 10-event discipline at the Barcelona Games when he could not clear a height in the pole vault at the Olympic trials in New Orleans. O’Brien recovered to win the gold medal in 1996.

Many T&F athletes have switched countries, for many reasons.

For the Olympics? I have always thought it was very tough to do so and required sitting out or something.

Can't remember the details but I read them on here.

"Gutless traitor"? Mondo, his brother, father & mother all went to LSU. He,like his brother, have dual citizenship. The reason he's jumping for Sweden is the U.S's Olympic arse. ridiculous system for qualifying for the Olympics. Here, an athlete has to qualify at Olympic trials. One bad day at the trials & the athlete does not make the Olympic team. The rest of the Olympic world does not use this ancient trial system. He & his family have always represented LSU well.

You mean there aren't dozens of world class pole vaulters in Sweden?

I could see doing that, no need to waste time when you have a clear path.

Correct
quote:

A bylaw to Rule 41 of the Olympic Charter states that athletes with dual citizenship can represent the country of their choosing, and athletes who gain a new citizenship or wish to change their Olympic affiliation can do so as long as at least three years have passed since they most recently competed for their previous country in an Olympic Games or a similarly sanctioned competition.
LINK

So he wouldn't be able to compete for the USA next year at the Games, but he could have switched three years ago. Our vaulters generally suck. He could have qualified with a pedestrian height for him and still made it.
