And still are used more widely than you think. Father in Law had medical leech treatment for a wound that would not close. I hear they are still used to treat blood clots as well as a wide range of other circulatory/blood related conditions.

Everything old is new again. Leeches are good for establishing blood flow particularly in hand surgery, maggots are good for dealing with necrotic tissue.
