I collect old electric trains manufactured before World War II. Most of them will run, but I'm always reluctant to run them because the risk of damage.

I've heard and seen some extravagant setups in this hobby, but I just for the life of me don't understand what the collector/builder gets out of it.

You can say this about damn near any hobby.

Those guys get enjoyment from it. So who cares?

I actually really like this stuff. Not sure why, I was just always fascinated with it. I guess just like how some people like cars more than others, some people like trains? My father actually worked for a railroad and I also spent weekends going to the Cass Railroad in WV as a kid, so maybe that played a part too. I used to have a bunch of HO Scale trains.

I think it is cool how some people really go all out with their layouts and just the detail that they have. Its pretty cool to see.

I've been into a couple of times; once as a child and later as an adult. I still like them but like another poster above I have other hobbies that take up all my money now.

If anyone is interested The Crescent City Model Railroad Club has their annual Christmas Open House starting this Saturday, 11/30, then 12/14, 12/21, and 01/04/20. I've been a couple of times and I liked it. Here's a LINK.

To be fair, if they hold their value or appreciate its not a terrible hobby money wise. I mean $50,000 seems like a lot but guys buy $100,000+ boats now a days that depreciate 10% or more a year.

I am into "O" scale. I run Lionel Legacy and run conventional also. I'm doing some landscaping work on it this morning while running a Legacy engine around the track smoking and moving ultra slow. You have a nice setup.

Yeah I got a room that kinda looks like that.. Only full of WWII stuff... Looks more like a WWII European theatre Command Post than a train room though...

But.. I really enjoy the WWII hobby though.. Even shoot the guns..
It's also enjoyable to search and learn about the items, where they came from, who had them and how they associated with other things.. etc...
