Mitsubishi Outlander: reliability or any other issues? UPDATE pg 3

I owned one Mitsubishi and it was trash. This was around 2004.

I think Mitshubishi finally jumped Nissan in terms of Japanese brand/quality, but both are in the same tier.

Mitsubishi's are like the Dollar General of vehicles. I had one in high school and it was pure garbage.

If I'm being 100% honest, I'm surprised to learn they still make them. I really did think they just went away.

Exactly, the dream is Highlander Hybrid, but my wallet says Outlander.

Great value, but you ultimately get what you pay for. Mitsubishi vehicles tend to be very lacking in features, are less fuel efficient, and less reliable, though better than they were in the past. If you can’t afford a 4-runner but need a similarly sized vehicle, you could do worse.

Mitsubishi is quickly replacing the Nissan brand (Altima, Maxima, Sentra, Pathfinder, Armada, etc.) and is catching up to the Dodge Charger/Challenger in terms of being popular with a certain segment of the population.

It's not a Toyota, but if you maintain them they will be fine. More like a Nissan (without the CVT), Mazda, or Chevrolet in terms of reliability.

Hyundai has improved their appeal, but their reliability and (more importantly) dealership quality has unfortunately not improved as much. No point in offering a great warranty or promising good after-sales service if the dealership network is sketchy more often than not. Splitting off Genesis into their own dealer network was a good move. But their core Hyundai/Kia dealerships have to improve and their warranty has to actually cover things. Their new EV line is actually very good (too bad almost nobody is buying them but Avis/Hertz).

Mitsubishi is in far worse shape in the US - arguably the worst car company that sells cars in this country. Their dealer network has largely died off, and they only have a couple of models now. None of them are truly competitive even against equally priced used cars. They may make a more reliable car than Hyundai, but that doesn't really matter if the design is so old, cheap, and absent of any current safety or UI tech. Most Mitsubishi products look and feel like they are geared for 3rd world markets.

Nissan has been floundering for years. They bought JATCo to source their transmissions, and it turns out that JATCo makes total garbage. There are signs of Nissan improving, but not investing more into their Z sports car, Titan pickup, or XTerra SUV was likely almost as big of a mistake as being so committed to poor quality CVTs. Most informed buyers steer clear of their CVT equipped vehicles. For a while that was almost everything they sold. In the US, Nissan's reputation is far, far behind where they were in the 1990s.

Had one for a couple of years 2016 model. Rides nice and handles well. Had no problems with it at all. If I understand it right, the 6 cylinder engine comes with the better transmission. The 4 cylinder I had was a little wonky on acceleration in some situations.

The seats lay back nicely making a 6' flat bed if you need that for hauling stuff.

Overall, it was cheap at $21k and a lot of car for the buck.
