And the OP literally talked about pushing legislation. Sounds like the typical leftist approach - dump law and government onto a problem by the truckload. It won’t actually fix anything, but let’s wreck it for the guy who’s doing better than me.
It’s legislation that keeps them in their spot. That’s a stupid effing argument

Don’t bring that in here, everyone knows that all it takes is a GED, and a Dad and Grandpa that are river pilots, and you’re on deck making $600K
nah, i mean everything he said is true. They have to go live at sea for 6 months and almost all grad from a maritime school. Regardless, each pilot can sponsor 2 people, which happen to be their sons 90% of the time and this is what people take issue with. There are also a lot of people on that river that worked their arse off to be in that position regardless and had to make sacrifices while others were at clubs drinking with their friends. They sacrifice their 20's to make that money
Also, I am fairly sure that a % of every pilots paycheck is taken and put directly in a group fund that is used to lobby for them, which is why this is continually unchecked.

And you should take the river pilot dicks out of your mouth.

Do you understand the difference between private businesses’ boards and a government regulatory board? Doesn’t seem like you do.

They have a good racket.

No river pilot has had control of a ship like that either. Because they don’t actually control and pilot the ship. Their job is a complete farce and mafiaesque racket.

Is it just pilots you’re mad at? If yes, why aren’t you mad at the same preferential practices happening in literally every industry and probably nearly every business in the country?
Or are you so clouded with hate and jealousy that you think this is exclusive to pilots?

There was a time, before radar, and the other sophisticated navigational equipment, where these pilots were necessary. Today though, it’s nothing but a political power play.
There are captains on tow boats pushing millions of dollars worth of Oil or Jet fuel through metropolitan waterways that make a fraction of these guys and they’re accountable for their performance vs these pilots who are immune and never even take the wheel of the ships that they supposedly assist.
They get onboard, grab a coffee and take a ride. If the vessel crashes into another vessel or hits a stationary structure, it is never the “Pilot’s”
fault as they’re immune. They could get on the radio and bark out orders for other vessels and cause chaos and it still would never be their fault!
The job is no longer necessary. Technology has made them redundant. No one has balls to stand up to them. Nungesser is their bitch too.
This.

No, having to be trained and having 5000+ hours of time on the river and a degree from Kingspoint or another maritime school and being a pilots kid. Its not given to you like a business being handed down. You earn it.

I have always wondered if the pilots actually take over the bridge and operate or if they just acted as navigators to the actual Captain piloting the ship?
Pilots tell the captain what to do. They don’t actually take the helm.
