I wouldn't have let my 14 year olds operate a motorized boat alone out in an area like this. Don't think that makes me a helicopter parent.

I don't see why you can't at least partially blame this on parenting.

Did mommy need to hold your wittle weenie when you made pee pee too?

That's quite a conclusion to jump to from me saying 14 year olds shouldn't be fishing offshore by themselves. The ocean is too unpredictable for a lot of adults. There's plenty of in shore water in Florida.

Did your dad get cheated on by your mommy as well?

In fairness, the parents were under the belief they were within the river. Not trying to get to the Bahamas in a 19' boat.

It's Murphy's Law when on the water. I've seen all sorts of crazy shite.
Even if the kids were supposed to be in the river, operation of a 19' boat is a little risky. Is that even legal?
Maybe a batteau with a 20 hp.

so these kids were supposed to be fishing in a river close to home and they decided to go to the Bahamas?

I'm assuming this isn't the first time the boys took the boat out. Or did something like this. Maybe I'm wrong but this probably wasn't the first time. And really, what teenager hasn't told his parents one thing and then went and done another.

I'm not suggesting that any sort of supervision is bad, or that it couldn't have been handled Better, but for people to automatically say "bad parenting" is stupid.

I guess the parents in "stand by me" should have been ran out of town on a rail too?

Not sure. But that's where parenting might have come into play.

Idk free. 8th graders are pretty dumb.

There is a reason they can't get a license.

If they would have given their kids the keys to their motorized boat and sent them out to the Gulf, at 14 years old, and they ended up dead?

Yeah...

Every state has different laws on operating a boat, I'm not familiar with Florida's

Is 14 8th grade? I'm thinking freshmen in high school.

and that they've done it before.

I mean, think about it. Is it more likely that they went to their parents, said "gee pop, I know we've never been out on a boat before but by golly we'd like to see what it's all about!" And he said "whatever, i'm reading GatorDroppings. Go ask your mother."

Or

That they'd been out on the boat supervised for a long time and had taken the boat out before without incident?

They weren't supposed to be in the gulf. I'm sure if they'd have unveiled their actual plan they would have gotten slapped for being stupid.

Yep 8th grade.
I guess it doesn't matter what we think. The parents will likely be living with insurmountable regret the rest of their lives.

They can't drive to the launch...wonder how they got in the river? House launch?

The only thing I'm sure of is you sure do assume a lot of things in your posts. And are sure of a lot of things that it would be impossible for you to be sure of unless you personally know the family.

Oh I know. Nothing that can be said to them will ever hurt as much as knowing their sons are dead and they could have stopped it somehow.

But that doesn't make every parent who lets a teenager adventure a bad parent.

The dad was interviewed earlier today and said that let this be a lesson to those around his son's age who are boating that they should always stick to the plan laid out and approved by their parents.
