A local boy is being called a miracle after suffering severe brain trauma from a dune buggy accident. He came back to life after his parents signed the paperwork to donate his organs. 13-year-old Trenton McKinley of Mobile was playing at a friend’s house two months ago. He was riding in a small utility trailer being pulled by a dune buggy for kids. Trenton says his friend pressed on the breaks suddenly, causing the trailer to flip. He says he quickly threw his friend’s 4-year-old niece off into the grass, but in the process, got caught in the trailer as it flipped.

He was rushed to USA Medical Center for emergency surgery. He had seven skull fractures. “All I saw was a stretcher with his feet hanging out. He was dead a total of 15 minutes,” said his mother, Jennifer Reindl, with tears in her eyes. “When he came back, they said he would never be normal again. They told me the oxidation problems would be so bad to his brain, that he would be a vegetable if he even made it.”
quote:
For the next several days, Trenton was brain dead and barely breathing. His parents were faced with a difficult decision. They signed the papers to donate his organs. "Five kids needed organs that matched him,” said Reindl. “It was unfair to keep bringing him back, because it was just damaging his organs even more." A day before doctors were set to pull the plug, Trenton started showing signs of cognition. He believes he was in heaven while he was gone.
quote:
"I was in an open field walking straight,” said Trenton. "There's no other explanation but God. There's no other way. Even doctors said it."
quote:
Slowly but surely, Trenton is making strides beyond what anyone expected, but it's not without a struggle. He's lost 50 pounds, and deals with nerve pain and seizures daily. Despite all that, this kid's still got a great sense of humor
quote:
Just talking to the young boy, you would never believe he has already been through three brain surgeries. He's still got a long road ahead with a lot of medical expenses. Trenton currently only has half of his skull. The missing piece is frozen at the hospital. He will have surgery soon to reconnect it.

Maybe the leprechaun snuck into his room and worked a little magic.

What happened to the 5 kids that thought they were getting a 2nd chance?

Apparently as he awoke his first question was “Is Infinity Wars out yet?”

Good thing they got signatures.

That’s amazing
Unfortunately some scumbag lawyer will have a field day against the hospital because of this.

"Miracle", but 5 kids who needed organs won't get them. I'm thrilled that this young man is seemingly recovering, but I feel bad for the other kids. Where's their miracle?

How much money was the hospital going to make on farming out his organs?

Wow great story! Hope he makes a full recovery!

Well they aren't going to intentionally kill the kid for his organs, we aren't Great Britain. Hopefully the 5 kids can get their organs from another source

Maybe you can call the hospital and tell them to contact the five and tell them they can your organs.

If it’s the same kid I’m thinking of, he’s doing great compared to how sick he was. Got his skull put back on recently. Never know how the brain is going to recover.
For all the terds that don’t deal with this everyday, go and spend a week up at these major trauma centers and then maybe you can have room to talk.
Many times these bad head injuries never recover, and family skips out. The state is left as ward. Presently we have a head injury that’s been in the hospital since 2010. Another 3 have been sitting here 6 months, and 1 just left to a nursing home after being here 8 months.
And no, the hospital gets no money from the organ donation. However, the organ procurement company, that’s a different story. In fact, it is very regulated on who can talk to family about organ donation, and anyone at the hospital is prohibited from having that discussion with family.
ETA: I’ve worked at the same hospital for 7 years, and we average 1 head injury like his per week. We average 5 organ donations per year. So hardly pushing people to organ donation. Out of that time, I know of 3 people who have made the type of recovery he has.
