How do you spread out your level up points? I have my power twice as high as everything else right now.

Just tap to the right of the stat you want to level up.

I'd go with the longsword at first. You'll get pets randomly as you defeat them. Increase your luck stat in order to raise your odds of getting a treasure (pet).

Indeed. It's complex in its simplicity. I'm fighting a Devil right now dressed in Fishy armor wielding a leek with a Licky as my pet.
But I'm recovering 15 hp a second and I get a 10pwrup.
Also, it recharges your life even when you aren't playing the game

im discovering that the two finger tap method is waaaayyyy better than simply holding down with one finger.

Some of these boss fights are insanely hard. You going to take as many hits as you can before you take damage and then get the hell out to recoup. Don't leave the screen though or you'll reset the boss health

Just found out with this combo
Weapon-scorpion
Armor-fishy
Pet-Zomble
It gives you the Dethmatch ability, which automatically runs and attacks for you, albeit slower than you normally would.
But that means you can start it with those equipped, then set it down and just have it rack up exp and gold until you die, then start again.
Easy way to grind.
