SgtMaj Basil Plumley most likely lied/embellished his war record in regards to the number of combat jumps and CIBs earned.
My answer is John Basilone and William Hawkins.

A Senior Chief Petty Officer I served with. No chest full of medals and ribbons. No stories of valor and heroics, just a real leader of men. He taught a lot of young people about how to deal with day-to-day situations with calmness and careful thought knowing these lessons would carry on long after their uniform was put away.

Quite a pairing. Agree on Smedley.
Oddly and coincidentally, those two bumped heads in DC when MacArthur (along with Patton) was tasked with dispatching thousands of well- traveled WW1 vets ("Bonus Army") from encampments. The vets were encouraged there by Gen. Butler to stand and demand the desperately needed bonuses promised by the government.
MacArthur for his part ordered his army troops to disband the vets (roughly) -- even to the point of badly injuring many.
just because he's one of my favorite all time military figures doesnt mean i agree with or like everything he did in his career. but i find him endlessly interesting and complex, and i think he has become a one dimensional almost buffoon-like figure to people that dont know much about him other than what they saw someone else say online.

He was one of my Lieutenants at An Nasiriyah. The size of an NFL linebacker, yet very kind and a servant leader. Still think about him often.

Master Chief Michael Kovach. He was the Master Chief Missile Technician on the Submarine, USS Lafayette. (1967) He was never too important to work alongside us Junior Shipmates.
