Got to meet him in real life just before he passed away.
Still intimidating as hell even in old age.

Carlos Hathcock. Supposedly the dude who made the "through the scope" shot.

I was in Quantico doing some BS job waiting for orders when Jim Webb visited the base. The word spread like wildfire, and it was like a rock star showing up on a college campus. Everyone stopped what they were doing and went outside hoping to catch a glimpse.

Fields of Fire is one of my favorite books of all time and probably one of the determining factors in me wanting to become a Marine officer. he has many other great books as well, and his autobiography is very good too.
that said, i still have a hard time with him after that stunt he pulled switching to the democrats. i dont think for a second he had some kind of true change of heart and suddenly aligned politically with the Left. he had a problem with Bush and did that just to hurt Bush politically.

My grandfather. I never heard him speak about WW2 and Battle of the Bulge until after he had a stroke and I stayed in the hospital with him for a couple of days and nights. This stuff that he was reliving was rough. Never saw him get angry or raise his voice. Hell of a man.

Audie Murphy stared in the movie about himself. To Hell and Back

Every single NCO in the US Army knows of him at least.

Aaron Bank. Or, if expanding to Allies, Sir Fitzroy Maclean

Though he wasn't mentioned, Brad Pitt's final stand from the tank in Fury was heavily inspired by Audie Murphy. The guy led his unit and held his ground from the top of a tank and fended off 6 Panzers and roughly 50 german soldiers if I remember correctly. Also, David Morrel said Rambo's character in First Blood was loosely based off of Audie Murphy, although the basis was mostly around his PTSD.
Point is, his name isn't often mentioned in movies but his influence is definitely there.
Edit: edited the number of soldiers he fended off from the tank
