It makes no sense why this street is so shitty. I get that the Mayor and city services are incompetent but even accounting for that I do not understand why they don't push the riff raff off that street.

One contributing factor has to be the bus stop at Canal and Elk/Basin.

True. But that whole street is fricked. Nice hotels and people just camped out outside the front doors. I get there's a lot of evacuees, but even on a perfectly normal weekday there's 15 rasta men up and down the street selling trinkets and burning a shite tone of incense. I'd rather the smell of blunt smoke because the incense is so bad.

That's certainly a big negative. NOPD has noted to business development folks that some dealers specifically choose that location for transactions because of the perceived cover offered by people waiting to change buses. It was temporarily moved near City Hall due to the Hard Rock collapse. Any time there was a show at the Saenger, there would be an NOPD car near that corner with its lights on, providing security.

Back in the day my mom had to put on the white gloves when her parents went to Canal St - it was an outing. Now it's an adventure.

Seedy pieces of shite like the Motwani's bought up a ton of store fronts and converted them to shitty tourist traps and junk trinket shite. Totally ruined the street.

Now it is just filled with trash shops, trash people and actual trash.

It would take a Guiliani level person and shift in attitudes to clean it up.

NOPD chief just said on WWL 2:00 news bite that the homicide involved evacuees. Sounded like he was saying both the shooter and victim, as well as subsequent shots that were fired down the street towards the river.

would you look at that!

Say what you want about New Orleans crime, but “slangin’ iron” on canal in broad daylight is very very abnormal

I'm guessing it was a racist white cop who fired the shots?

No it isn't. Unless you mean once or twice a year is abnormal

That is 4 blocks away and hasn't been in operation in almost and entire year due to the hard rock. There are many issues with this area and people loitering, but public transit is hardly one of those problems.
