...and you're in a 1,200 or 1,500 lb Cessna that gets hit by a 20,000 or 25,000 lb jet going who knows how fast.

a 150 doesn't just "come out of nowhere" on a F-16.. serious pilot error is involved.

Dude, no lie, I fricking hate that airport. It's ridiculously busy and it's an uncontrolled field(sorta). And there is controlled airspace all around it but a lot of pilots don't realize it's controlled. You have a mix of newbie Cessna drivers, newbie fighter pilots, and experienced corporate pilots all in a really small area. Do your pilot a favor and help him keep an eye out for traffic. We used to have a Baron that we normally flew single pilot but when we went to Destin we took an extra pilot just for the extra set of eyeball. Especially this time of year.

Does the fact that Eglin AFB and ValP airport share runways facto into that at all?

Yeah he already told me he hates flying there

Eglin's runway is pointed directly at Destin, so technically you're supposed to contact Eglin before departing Destin. There's even a sign at the end of the runway saying to do so but a lot of pilots, believing Destin is an uncontrolled field because it doesn't have a Tower don't do so. You really have to be on your toes there.
ETA: I haven't flown in 4 years so I'm not really up to speed on how it is now.

No, but an F-16 can "come out of nowhere" on a C150. Factor in the rate of closure, a maneuvering F-16, and the possibility of an inactive Mode C aboard the civilian aircraft , and you have zero reaction time. See it, hit it.
Pilot never saw it, Range Control never saw it,and ATC probably never saw it until it was too late.

I agree. Destin's airport is a lot busier than I thought it would be. I stayed at a condo near there last month. Literally one small jet after another was taking off or landing. I had no idea that many private jets would be flying into destin. $$$$$$$

What's normal cruising speed for a F-16? Even at what I'd consider to be a relatively slow speed for a jet fighter - 300 or 350 kph - it's covering a mile in 8 or 10 seconds. At 600 knots, it's down to about 5 seconds.

Eglin AFB now rents its long runways to commercial passenger carriers. Air Force is competing with both the Valparaiso and Destin airports. 3 commercial airports within 5 miles of each other and that doesn't even include Hurlbert Field which is strictly military.

Or a Cessna.....
Did you see that crashed Cessna story a few pages back? That was my first flying job. The guy who took my spot when I left for the corporate world forgot to switch fuel tanks and crashed that fricker into some poor old lady's pot farm

CBS Evening News is reporting that the collision happened between 2,000' and 3,000'. The pilot, Erin Johnson (I believe), has about 1,500 hours.

You do realize that in most combat situations fighter craft do not radiate anything?
No radar.
They are reliant on mobile radars for guidance.

There is a whole procedure for that place. A common radio frequency for talking to pilots entering the pattern and taking off and then yeah you have to contact the AFB as well.
I actually have a Florida airports manual on my desk right now.....
let me see.
lol from 2009, probably outdated.
