This is mostly true, but it's important to note that the right to own firearms and defend one's self is enshrined in the Mexican Constitution.

That right had been so eroded by "common sense gun control," though, that there's a single gun store in the entire country and it's located on an army base.

The problem is a government who insists on legislating morals- all morals- even if they have to make them up. Many governments have tried, and all will fail. The answer on how to stop the problem of "the cartels’ power and ruthless killing" is to legalize certain drugs that can/have/and do offer at least some sort of medicinal benefit (e.g., heroine won't make the cut) and regulate and tax them out in the open.

Obviously that would open up a whole 'nother set of problems, but to the specific proposal that you made in order to solve this problem, i.e., Americans either "kicking the habit" (not possible) or the cartel's will continue to kill (and they will as long as humans exist in the USA where the drugs they sell are illegal) is not feasible. The legalization scenario can't be any worse than the problem we have right now - a problem that you yourself recognized in your post. If we want to crush the cartels then we ought to begin the arduous process of legalizing certain "cash crop" cartel drugs, but for various illogical and illicit reasons, we would never do anything like that, and so the perpetuation continues on.
