Meteorite/Comet
These are not the same, and not interchangeable.

Based on that picture, it’s neither a meteorite or a comet.
Looks like something breaking up in the atmosphere.

News stations here are saying they are being told it a degraded starlink.

Sounds like it was a Chinese imaging satellite:
quote:
The event happened just after 10 p.m. and was visible from multiple states, according to witnesses who shared footage on social media.
While there was no word from officials, astronomer Jonathan McDowell identified the space debris as a Chinese satellite.
“The commercial imaging satellite ????02? (GaoJing 1-02, Superview 1-02), operated by Beijing-based SpaceView, reentered above New Orelans at 10:08 p.m. CST heading northbound towards Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri and was widely observed,” McDowell said. McDowell added: “The satellite has been space junk and dead as a doornail since January 2023. This was an uncontrolled reentry. We knew it was coming down today but only with ±2 hour accuracy estimate so we didn’t know where (at 17000 mph, ±2 hours is more than one trip round the Earth).”

At least someone knows what it was. Like I said in the previous post, the news stations up here were throwing out starlink, although some just said a satellite.

So according to this thread, we have sightings of the same event from East Texas, along the Gulfcoast, and as far north as Chicago.
Any idea what the elevation of it was?
60k feet? 100k?

It was likely at least 50 miles up when we saw it here.

reliable reports indicate this was either Starlink 3288, or a disintegrating commercial imaging satellite (GaoJing 1-01) operated by Beijing-based SpaceView
