Medical students or doctors please read...

Someone i know recently was involved in an accident where they crushed 3 vertebrae involving--C4-C6.
The spinal cord was almost completely severed with spinal fluid leaking from this site.
This is what is remarkable, if not a miracle in and of itself only because i am a novice and no doctor of medicine of surgery to properly calculate the enormity of it all: he can move his legs, toes, arms, fingers. The doctor who performed the surgery about fainted when he saw it.
His only problems as of now is holding down food as he is throwing it up. His motor function with his fingers is not right yet, but looks promising.
My question is how can this person be able to do any of the things listed with such a severe injury. The doctor mentioned phantam movements, but this person literally told this doctor, "Bull shite" and showed him moving his legs and toes by thought.
Any thoughts on the mattee by more knowledgeable people would be welcomed. Thank you.

Well, if he truly severed his cord that high, he should be struggling to breathe, much less voluntarily moving his legs.

My non-medical opinion is your friend is a certified bad-arse. I wish him luck in his continued recovery.

This isn’t really the answer you are looking for, but: the human body is a wondrous thing. As much as we know we about it, we still have huge black holes in our knowledge of why people physiologically respond differently to situations, trauma, illness, etc. In short, sometimes there’s no known answer.

This is what i thought, but there he is operating a wheelchair motor to move.
I have a feeling. he will be asked to be studied for awhile to see how this happened.

If he really severed his spinal cord at C4-C6; he would be completely paralyzed from the neck down and struggling to breathe on his own. My guess is that he crushed the vertebrae and the “CSF leak” was causing the cord to be compressed and they were able to decompress it.

He would be unable to move his extremities and likely have difficulty breathing with that degree of injury.

I know for certain that what was shared with me was that he almost completely severed his spinal cord.
The doctor shared that he would "never walk again".
I dont wish this thread to break down into some religious dogma bacm and forth. I am asking for scientific ubderstanding to this as i personally do not believe in miracles. This as told to me is impossible from all accounts.
So i am interested in seeing if anyone here could point me in the rught direction in finding out how this would be possible.
