Almost 2 years ago I made a trip to the ER while I was on the road for work. I got a bill in a month after that for an absurd amount of money. When that invoice came in I haggled with the ER about the price. They said there was nothing they can do and I was expected to pay that amount. Since then I haven't paid a dime and haven't received another invoice. My question is, is there a way to check to see if they turned me over to collections? I will obviously pay it if it gets to that point. Or did they realize that bill was crazy and just settled with the amount my insurance paid them?

Medical billing is stupid. I've refused to pay a couple of outrageous bills. One dinged my credit but I disputed it and it eventually went away.

Why would you wait until collections to try and resolve it?

Your credit score must suck arse.

If it didn't hit your credit report, let sleeping dogs lie.

When you say outrageous bill do you mean you were billed for stuff you don't think they did, or that the value was more than you thought you should have to pay?

The value was far less than what was billed. And I wasn't planning on waiting until it went to collections I assumed I would receive more paper work on a new bill or letting me know it was going to go to collections of it wasn't paid. My credit is great fwiw.

Not budging off of a bill is rare? Pay cash and they should take 40% off any amount usually. Whether it be an uninsured total (may take more off) or your leftover after an 80/20 plan split.

If you hear anything else, pay something. Even if it is $10. If they take it it usually won't go to collections. Pay what you can. They should be happy with ANY revenue.

First rule of medical billing. You aren't paying for what services you received. You are paying for services you received PLUS a portion of the services that every societal leech that goes to the ER for a stubbed toe got because they refuse to pay.

There is an entire class of people in the US who think that the hospital ER is their personal health clinic.

You should check with your insurance and see if there was an EOB on file. Explanation of benEfits. The hospital might have just accepted what insurance paid except if you had not reached your deductable. Hospitals give write offs to certain insurance companies.

My wife went to ER on a Saturday night. They didn't have a surgeon on call and sent her to their bigger hospital. Only thing done was them drawing blood. They admitted her at midnight and made her wait until the surgeon's rounds at 7 in the morning. He said to discharge her which took a couple more hours. She had the surgery for $300 Less than 48 hours later in a doctor's office. Bill was outrageous and it took a million visits to get a detailed bill. When I did, the ER bill included 2 ER visits on the same day because they screwed up the transfer plus 8 hours of observation at $100/hour. Still in dispute because of the denial to see the triage nurse or ER doc at second facility that the original ER doc told us specifically to talk to because he explained everything to them. Pretty close to taking them to court with the doctors' on our side to point out that the stupid student nurse and residents screwed it all up. At one point, the resident printed out a medical journal to show my non-medical wife. The original doc called my wife a day or two later to follow up on how the surgery that he ordered went. He was pissed to find out his orders were ignored and never even told him, plus amazed the residents would print a medical journal that is inconclusive.

TL;DR Wife charged double on accident and doc's orders ignored by residents equals going to court.

believe me, if you haven't heard anything, it has not been turned over to a collections agency...if it goes to them, they will call you every day to hassle you.

This isn't necessarily directed at you, but...

I think a lot of people don't realize (or don't care) why ER visits are so expensive.

The biggest factor is all of the labs and tests ordered. To lay people these may seem unnecessary. However, you'd be shocked at how often benign symptoms lead to discovery of serious issues. Also, in our litigious society if a diagnosis happens to be missed the doctor and hospital may be on the hook for millions.

Secondly, is the number of people who use the ER for stupid, pointless shite. Do you have any idea how many worthless fricks come in seeking pain pills with a laundry list of symptoms of complaints. The ER doctor is obligated to investigate their complaints regardless of how thinly veiled their act may be. Additionally, these people almost never have insurance. So they waste time, run up a huge bill, and leave the hospital on the hook for it.
