North Korea is its own world in many ways. Now, it is getting its own time zone to match. State news agency, KCNA, has announced that North Korea will set its clocks back by 30 minutes to "Pyongyang time" on August 15 — the 70th anniversary of liberation from Japan. That will reset the time to GMT+08:30, as it was before Japanese colonization.

"The wicked Japanese imperialists committed such unpardonable crimes as depriving Korea of even its standard time while mercilessly trampling down its land with 5 000 year-long history and culture and pursuing the unheard-of policy of obliterating the Korean nation," KCNA reported on Friday (August 7).

New time zone could 'cause some problems' North Koreans already have their own calendar. Instead of counting from the birth of Christ, they count from the birth of founding leader, Kim Il Sung. Kim was born in 1912 — known in North Korea as Juche 1, making this year Juche 104.

They can keep doing these things as often as they want. I enjoy the laughter quite a bit.

Doesn't China basically already do this. All of China is one time zone. It's a little bizarre for such a large country.

Well that last paragraph seems pretty ignorant. Unless I'm mistaken, there are multiple countries who don't use the birth of Christ to dictate their calendar with Japan being one.

Meh, they aren't the first to do something like this. Take a look at a world time zone map, there's all kinds of fricked up shite going on in Asia. Nepal is 5 3/4 hours ahead of UTC; Iran is 3 1/2 ahead; Afghanistan is 4 1/2 ahead. Go north out of Iran, into Turkmenistan means setting your watch ahead 1 1/2 hours. East into Afghanistan, you go up 1 hour. North into Armenia or Azerbaijan, go ahead half an our; west into Iraq fall back half an hour; and west into Turkey puts you back 1 1/2 hours. frick, China's big arse uses the same time zone across the entire country.

It was the original timezone before Ww2. South Korean officials have thought about doing it too. It's really not that big of a deal.
