According to the story at no point did he touch her genitals.

It never says whether he did or not. Just that his hands were wandering.

If we set aside this story for a second... Can anyone name a failed attempt at sexual intimacy (no matter how civilized) that is not sexual assault by current definitions?

It seems to become assault as soon as it is unwanted. But most people (especially less attractive people) sometimes don't realize the other person is not interested (or not interested in more than a kiss, or more than a little fooling around etc.)

Because the definition of sexual assault is extremely broad it seems likely to me that 100% of people have been sexually assaulted if they have done any dating, hooked up, or even just gone to a dance club and had some random grinding her butt on your crotch. Does that make sense?
