East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome and incoming New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell have both been named on Essence Magazine's "woke 100 women" list for 2018.
Each is the first elected female mayor in the history of Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
The magazine highlighted a quote from Broome on what it takes to run for office, as the mayor-president said, "you don’t have to have political experience to serve people; you have to have a heart to serve people. And you have to have the passion.”
Broome posted on social media that she was "thrilled" to make the list.
Cantrell takes office next month in New Orleans. The magazine described her as "deeply connected to her community" and cheered her vow to address inequality among black residents in the Crescent City.
