For the record, the teacher said that NATidefan & General Dodo’s answers for the area of the star were both wrong. I finally worked it out and got 130 and she said that was wrong, too

The 2.8 cm length was an extra hint, as the 4 cm hypotenuse from the octagon would be all you needed to figure that out.

Area of a right triangle is (base times height) divided by 2
Area of a rectangle is width time length.
That will be $35
Area i got for the first one is 128.6

If I had math like this in the fifth grade, I'd still be in the fifth grade...

So solve it. What’s your answer
Here's the deal. Have the kid solve it and then post his answer here. I'll let him know whether he's right, because obviously no one in his family will be able to help him with this.
Also, request the board of education do a review of this teacher. This shite should be in inches and/or feet, not that bullshite, whiney-arse metric crap. Metric is for weenies who are incapable of understanding fractions and can only count in base-10.

Well, hell! Looks like the kid has his stuff together! Well done!

So this entire thread was pointless. Kids knows, dad sucks, the end.

I wonder if Dad was just trying to play us and see how many on here are actually competent versus being mouth-breathers.

About 7 years ago I posted a bonus question from my son's calculus homework on the OT. Now, I'M the mouth breather when it comes to calculus, but it stirred quite the debate amongst the higher educated. I believe it was one of those puzzles meant to flummox the self-inflated mathematical egos in the crowd.

Yeah but she said both of those answers were wrong. That’s what we don’t understand

128.6 is also incorrect
It's correct when drinking 2 fingers of bourbon

If I'm going to play dad to your kid I at least need picks of your wife.

Go back and look at the dimensions of the shapes then work out the math for the a^2+b^2=c^2 and you will find that the measurements provided for the sketch itself are mathematically and geometrically incorrect. What she has given the students is a problem with existing information that is mathematically impossible in plane geometry. (That's just on the first one - the star shape - after I went ahead and broke it down.)
