The earth is in a solar system that rotates in the galaxy in a galaxy that rotates.

So really depends on what your question is relative to.

Pretty sure the earth is never in the same spot ever.

Yup

This was kind of a spinoff topic from another board about time travel. Let's say you had a ship that could go into space and travel one year into the future. That would be awesome, except the Earth is X distance away now.

Blows my mind how fast we are moving and we do not even know it.

Then you look at light and it travels close to 6 trillion miles in a year.

The usual "explanation" given for this sort of thing is that if whoever invented the machine was smart enough to build a time machine, they'd also be able to build in the ability for the time machine to calculate the earth's position in the universe at the same time.

You have to define it's current location first using a reference of two other points in space. Otherwise, the question has no answer since location is relative by itself. For instance. There's no reason that, technically, the earth can't be defined as the "center" of the universe and doesn't "move" at all.

Yes. The question is can you see them working? Any answer is just a guess. One guess I read when the car reaches light speed it would become essentially stationary in space and the light beams would travel fast than the speed of light.

Of course they would... Speed is relative and, again, requires a point of reference. The person in the cars going that "fast" would be able to turn the lights on and they would work as normal. But the person "standing still" would not be able to see the lights come on at all.

Not true. Sort of. The car itself and the person in it would not become stationary (due to time) from the perspective of a person standing still...

Depends on what's powering them. Currently, we have zero battery technology that can withstand that speed.

There is no reason to think you need to be precise. There are several variables outside of our control.

Roughly speaking though, it is over 11 billion miles away from whenever you decide a starting point.

The Earth travels the distance of a light year in a little over 500 years, although some claim 750 years.

Well, technically, since the car is traveling AT the speed of light, the observer would not be able to see the car at all.
