I don't know if she deserves full pay for that duration but the fact that she gets nothing is pretty messed up.
Your wife's employer is paying your wife for work. Your wife is not working as a result of her decision to have a child. Your wife's employer owes your wife nothing.

How about no. You have a child, you need to plan accordingly. It is not the responsibility of your employer or tax payers to pay for your leave.
I'm not a woman's right activist, but I feel you are way off base here. Not only does the current structure make it very difficult on women and their husbands, but it's just bad business practice.

My company gives 16 weeks 100% pay for the primary (female) and 2 weeks off for secondary (male)

My wife works for the state of Louisiana. She had to use accrued vacation time.

All of these people who get paid are usually getting it through a short-term disability policy that is likely paid for by the company. They are very cheap relatively speaking, and insurance can be purchased on the open market to compensate you during maternity leave.
While I appreciate a company with good benefits, I think it is important for an employee to understand what can be done on their end to fill in the gaps. Hopefully you can find decent coverage for the next time, if their is a next time...
We tried to get her on a group disability policy but she couldn't get enough people in her company to sign up so she was pretty much screwed. So she gets to use her 1 week of vacation laying in the hospital.

We are the nation of working robots/slaves. and many slaves love to defend their owner
-No paid maternal leave (worst in the world)
-Worst vacation policy in the world.

While I am a libertarian, this is bad policy for fostering a healthy society.

My wife is 23 weeks pregnant with triplets. She got put on bed rest at 14 weeks. Her company is paying 100% for 12 weeks, but as soon as that runs out - when they put her on unpaid leave - they're sending us the bill for her insurance.

Not to mention that slighted employees are the ones most likely to work inefficiently and steal from their employers.

You should have one last date with your sanity before biding it farewell forever.

Pretty much. It is crazy how little people here value time off and life outside of work.

Is this more or less than the standard in today's business climate?
and she gets this
first 2 weeks not paid at all, has to use own PTO
next 4 weeks paid at 60%
After that nothing
I would say this is standard. It is traditional Short Term Disability through the Hartford

Come on. Now the employer should act out of fear? Getting paid and maybe future promotions should be sufficient motivation for doing a fine job. If you're the kind who's willing to steal at work to justify your stance, you're not just a bad employee...you're a shitty person in general.

My wife was given 12 weeks paid, but had to pay her sub what the school decided. After paying the sub, she basically had 10% pay for the 12 weeks. School wouldn't hire well qualified subs that my wife recommended for the same price as the fresh 21 year-old guy they picked
. He quit with no notice to be a movie extra. Wife was pressured to come back 4 weeks early and when she said no, the school made her resign. 4 of the last 5 teachers taking leave during the year have been pressured to resign. This is at probably the top Catholic all girl HS in NOLA. The president (nun) also likes to find out where the teacher ends up. She calls to talk crap about the teacher. New principal usually replies with that they like the teacher anyway and tells teacher about the call.
Maternity leave in this country is pathetic. Don't get me started on the stigma about even talking about paternity longer than 2 weeks.

How old are you? I'm always curious about the age of people in threads like this.

I used to be all cock of the walk about how forced maternity leave is bullshite. However, when I see we are the only progressive country without it, maybe everyone else isnt wrong and we are the only right one. Makes more sense when you are the stand alone you maybe the problem
