I'm 100% for maternity leave benefits, but I don't want the government mandating them. Let companies sink or swim on their own.
One could have said the same for the ridiculous working conditions in the 1900s. Hell, that was the argument of conservative at the time

Do you believe unemployment insurance, or workers comp are adequate functions of government?
I certainly do not. Insurance should be left to the private companies that offer those products.

Then unionize. Let the employers and employees negotiate. Let employers differentiate themselves in 2016 when employees are more mobile and flexible than ever.
Think of it like the max contract in the NBA - if you removed that, you could allow small-market teams to throw as much money as they want at free agents in hopes of getting them to come their way. When you mandate a maximum contract across the board, you handicap those teams that cannot differentiate themselves otherwise.

My wife worked for General Mills. She had 8 weeks paid and 3 half pay plus was able to use however much vacation she had which equals full pay.

It is a very unpopular opinion to have but I agree with you. I am a small business owner and only have one female employee in the office who is done with kids. But if I hired another woman when she retires to run the office and she needed 3 months off a few times over a five years, how am I supposed to deal with that? I know what they say I am supposed to do but I can't shut down my business for 3 months a year and it isn't fair to bring in someone to replace her and train them to do the job and then tell them to beat it when the original woman is ready to come back.
Me too.
Small business owner with one employee.
You get it.

Why should you as an employer pay for someone to take vacations, why should you as an employer pay for someone when they aren't working because of an injury, why should you as an employer pay a match for someone's retirement, why should you as an employer pay for health insurance?
Because those benefits are for every employee

I am assuming this is a hypothetical question, because with a response like that, you would most likely be the guy that drives a business into the ground.
Negative Ghost rider, I bought a failing business 15 years ago and turned it around, I have very happy employees that have been with me for a very long time

The 12 weeks via FMLA is pretty standard, but I don't think the 100% pay is as common. Think my wife's was 60%.
Some states mandate 16 weeks of maternity leave, but it is not compensated. 12 weeks of paid maternity leave is extremely rare.
Employers must hold your job for 12 weeks for FMLA, but it is not compensated. Many employers require you to use vacation concurrently with FMLA leave...so you are paid until your vacation runs out, then the rest of the leave is uncompensated.

It's the general consensus that the erosion of the family is cause for many of the problems our society has today. But at the same time our society pressures new mothers into going back to work immediately and relying on daycares to raise our kids.

We tried to get her on a group disability policy but she couldn't get enough people in her company to sign up so she was pretty much screwed. So she gets to use her 1 week of vacation laying in the hospital.
Your wife is an audiologist and only gets one week of vacation?

I just returned from Vienna and my friend's wife had a baby about 5 months ago. She's an opera star riding her career while it's soaring. So hubby gets 12 months paternity leave at full pay. They travel together and he cares for the baby when she's working

My wife is 23 weeks pregnant with triplets. She got put on bed rest at 14 weeks. Her company is paying 100% for 12 weeks, but as soon as that runs out - when they put her on unpaid leave - they're sending us the bill for her insurance
Just curious...what will your insurance premium be vs. the 12 weeks paid leave ?
It seems to me her company is just prepaying her future insurance premiums.
