I often wonder how this doesn't happen more often with all the idiots we have on the highways.

They say you are safer in your vehichle. The one pile up i experienced i was able to avoid and get on the grass and ended up stuck in some deep snow. I ran from my truck to up the embankment to the tree line. It was white out conditions, I wasn't sitting in the zone waiting to get smashed

Kind of hard to brake on sheet of ice. Man, some of you folks are dumb.

Thats a good point. Not sure where they could really go anyway and be safe. I couldn't see what was coming over the hill and had somewhere to go

For sure, it wasn't white out conditions so you would have a good chance at timing it right. Might not be the smartest decision but I wouldn't be able to just sit there

I think a lot of this may have been due to freezing fog or mist, making it particularly difficult to see. I doubt other 18-wheelers that had been involved were able to provide a warning about it.

I'm looking at some traffic cams in the area, and they have an entire army of tow trucks/flat beds lined up ready to go.

My thought was just put it into a slide and try to hit on the passenger side. Assuming you're alone. And of course, you're already sliding because it's ice.

Problem is it just all happens so fast and we are all on auto-pilot driving because it's such a mundane, routine thing. Then you're in shock from having just rear ended someone and then you're nailed from behind. Just too many things too quick.

Pileups like that happen pretty fast and generally before anyone can get on the horn to warn others. You have to think they're going at least 50-60+ and it takes forever for those vehicles to come to a full stop in normal conditions. Almost impossible to bring it to a stop on black ice.

I get that, but he seemed to be going way too fast given the conditions. Icy roads weren't exactly a surprise
