I hate traveling on the interstate. They should be expanded across the entire median to alleviate some of the problems
This accident actually happened in the Express Lanes. Every vehicle was pinned in between the barricades with nowhere to escape. The speed limit is 75MPH and this was probably the first elevated area and the first iced over area any of them came across. This came as a complete surprise to the first accident car and then the chain reaction happened. It was also dark when this happened. A recipe for disaster.
Here's a Hyundai...

I might add, hats off to the first responders. And God bless those folks. What a difficult job these people have. The horror they witnessed today will be with them the rest of their lives.

Naw, every other elevated highway in the area was fine. This one wasn't which surprised those that had been over other elevated sections that had no ice.

I know this highway intimately and may or may not have worked on it. There was ice on roads in DFW due to frozen rain all nite and low temperatures. This $1.4B NTE3A highway was completed in 2019; A foreign company owns the maintenance on it for 52 years collecting toll revenues. Accident took place on a long bridge section in the express toll lanes (2 lanes with 75 mph speed limit; with SSTR barrier on both sides thus cannot exit). Videos are absolutely horrible with semi trucking thru all those cars like shoveling snow... thoughts and prayers with families.

Lol there is no way to safely drive on ice. Ice gonna win.

What?? More than 300 accidents were reported overnight, with 103 major accidents, 133 major accidents on freeways, 86 minor accidents, four minor city equipment accidents, two major city equipment accidents, and one major city equipment accident on the freeway. There was 18 car pile up on Julius Schepps Freeway that killed one man. A total of 9 deaths across DFW.

I was out on the freeway this morning and it was all smooth sailing. There were obviously bad spots but you could drive miles and not hit anything bad. That why people let down their guard. I did too because I saw no ice.

Hindsight is 20/20, but no one thought to close some of these roads? Particularly in high elevation areas.

They don't do that here unless it's really bad. They pre treat with a brine solution that is supposed to stick to the road for a day or two and it generally works. If they would have shut all elevated highways it would shut dfw down.

Another poster added that a slight rise in elevation hid the accident from view some distance out. Drivers crested the knoll at 75+, and were right on top of it.

The roads were treated for ice. Obviously, some areas were washed clean by rain before the freezing rain hit but the majority of the highways were ice free. This gave people a false security.
I drove on the roads and only encountered 1 area with ice.

In every driver’s head should be the awareness of the conditions outside, speed lowered accordingly, and the fact that not all drivers around, ahead, or behind your vehicle will react well to sudden adversity and road hazards. Losing control means all bets are off.

I'm sure it has already been posted this morning, but the report is that there were 133 vehicles in the pile-up. 6 fatalities, sadly.

ain't too many bridges along that stretch of interstate, it's flat as a pancake, mainly just overpasses at exits

He lived. There’s talk of it on Reddit and a fj cruiser forum.
