One thing that doesn't make any sense whatsoever: he almost exclusively played video poker. Those things would not be in any casino if it were losing money for the house. I get that he got perks and what not from playing so many hands, but he 100% lost money doing this over time.
Can one launder money through a casino (or multiple casinos) and not get caught?

Appreciate the article. I'm trying to fill in the gaps on how this guy was paying the bills and what his work history has been the last 30 years. Is video poker easy to win? It seems like an easy win for casinos.

Video poker makes perfect sense - using the right machines (north of 99 percent pay out) - you can grind a meager profit when you factor in comps.
Read several articles/books about it. But he have to be legally quick and play it perfect.... to make a little over minimum wage lol

Yes, one can launder money through gambling.
The machines make money because most players arent mathematical geniuses that know every odd.

I'm beginning to think he wasn't as wealthy as people are saying. He might have had money at one point but spending that much time in a casino takes its toll on the pocketbook. Maybe he was flipping debt on credit cards and it was starting to catch up with him.

I agree, but then how do you justify that he bought a $350k house with cash, and reportedly paid all his debts in a timely manner?
Posted on 10/5/17 at 5:12 pm to Tyga Woods
The NYT article said he had a 6 figure credit line at Mandalay Bay. It also said the high roller poker machines paided out 99.17%.

The average person just playing, not at all. If you look at odds of certain machines and games, pay tables, when progressives hit, avg. loss and shite like that you can probably have some good months in video poker.
I knew some local people around town when I was in the casino business that did it full time (not just video poker). Horrible way to live, grinding, jumping pfrom casino to casino all day. They always looked stressed and tired.

But how did he get from his last known job in the late 80s, to where he could live off video poker? He paid cash for his house, $369k. And owned one in Florida, planes too. Every article I've read says exclusively video poker for him, and those are usually for folks who want to dump some money into a machine that they know they'll rarely win.

He could've refinanced some of his properties or liquidated some assets. I could be totally wrong though. Pure speculation at this point

Yeah, and if you have an open line of credit that will let you play until you win, I bet you could win plenty

The accounting thus far though, says this isnt the case.
I do find it suspicious that he seemed to have plenty and plenty of money. Then again, no kids...

What's interesting to me is that there's all of this evidence of how much money he spent, but almost no evidence of how he made that money.
Time Money - Article about Paddock's Finances
Time Money - Article about Paddock's Finances
quote:
As investigators work to uncover the motives of Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock, they keep coming back to one of the most unusual aspects of the 64-year-old's personal profile: his money.Paddock had two planes, owned multiple homes, and regularly dropped tens of thousands of dollars in Vegas casinos, according to recent reports. His shocking collections of guns and ammunition alone may have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
quote:
His brother said that Stephen Paddock made some $2 million when the two sold their real estate business a few years ago. And just before the massacre, he wired $100,000 to his girlfriend, Marilou Danley, in the Philippines, a transaction investigators are still attempting to explain.
quote:
Much of Paddock’s money appears to have been spent in casinos. NBC News reported that Paddock often gambled at least $10,000 a day in Las Vegas casinos, and sometimes upwards of $30,000 per day. He reportedly gambled a total of at least $160,000 at Vegas casinos in the weeks before the mass shooting. It's unclear how much he won or lost over this time span.
quote:
Paddock lived with his girlfriend in an upscale 55+ retirement community in Mesquite, Nev., about 80 miles from Las Vegas. He bought the 2,018-square-foot home in 2015 for $369,000, according to the Review-Journal. Paddock also paid $238,000 in 2013 for a home in the Sierra Canyon by Del Webb community in Reno—where properties now list for $300,000 to $600,000. In addition, the Reno Gazette Journal reported that Paddock owned a condo at the Montage in downtown Reno before selling it in December 2016.
quote:
According to the Los Angeles Times, Paddock's other real estate holdings over the years have included "two run-down apartment buildings in a working-class neighborhood of Hawthorne" in southwestern Los Angeles County, and another apartment complex outside Dallas in Mesquite, Texas. From 2013 to 2015, Paddock owned a two-bedroom home in a 55-plus community near Melbourne, Fla., which he sold for $235,000.

Assuming he had 2nd vehicle and he “mowed down” ALL of the SWAT team (
). How does he get outside the huge perimeter of LEO for miles?? And why did he register in his real name at the hotel if he wanted to get away?

To get that room, he needed to use his status, so that piece is answered.
I dont really think he thought he would legit get away though. He seems too smart to have thought that.

Yes, guy on Fox has said hos friends involved in the investigation have "reviewed the footage" from the room.
That probably tells them everything.

Meh, with enough cash, anybody can get any room they want. He had plenty enough cash to score that room as John Smith.
Agree, no way he thought he’d get away. Way too smart for that. Possibly he could have had a plan to get to point B and do more carnage. But mow down SWAT, get to a vehicle outside, then avoid 10k LEO on the lookout to get away scot free? Nah.
