The dialogue about mental illness is they need to be locked up like they were in the 70s and earlier, but there's no political will for either side. So it will become like it aleays does a damn fool gun debate.

not it isn't. not even remotely close. the dialogue about mental illness is that it's completely underfunded and the access to resources are sparse. even if you wanted to "lock them up," where are you doing to do that? in another understaffed hospital?

A lot of people are going to ask "why" this happened to their friends and families. After tragedies like this, people seek answers even when information is very scarce.
As in a lot of other cases, there won't be a logical reason. He likely wasn't targeting a specific person or persons. He clearly has some kind of paranoia issues, and his social media posts don't make any sense. It's likely we won't know why this madman made the choice to target that movie theater.
