The term casualty is mostly used when describing deaths not non-fatal injuries. (although I'm sure you're right technically, or literally I guess it would be)

i'm 51 and i've never heard this word associated with an injury, only a death.

Well yeah, in the age of sensationalized journalism, using "mass casualty" is going to get clicks. It's technically true and the most sensational way to word it.

Accurately using a word you should have learned in middle school is not sensationalism.
