A Maryland woman sat in a chair on her front lawn and watched her house burn down last week after setting it on fire while a person was still inside, officials said.

quote:

Witnesses told officials that a woman, later identified as 47-year-old Gail J. Metwally, set multiple fires in the home before sitting in a chair on the front lawn and watching the flames engulf her house.

Video purported to show the chaotic scene was posted on social media showing a woman appearing to read a book while the house bursts into flames.

quote:

The purported video shows two men rushing toward the burning home after hearing a woman yell from the basement.

"Get out of the house!" the man recording the video says. "Hurry!"

Officials said that the bystanders helped the woman through the basement window to get to safety.

quote:

Deputies with the Cecil County Sheriff's Office spotted Metwally in the area while responding to the fire and detained her, the state fire marshal’s office said.

Metwally was charged with first- and second-degree attempted murder, arson, assault, two counts of malicious burning, two counts of malicious destruction of property, and two counts of reckless endangerment.

Which I'm sure is why it is vacant in that particular pic.

I just want to say that I know her and she was very very very sick. She needed more treatment than she was getting. But she was getting as much as cecil county could give her. This is the reality of the mental healthcare system in the United States. She’s not smiling bc she’s proud of herself, she doesn’t know wtf is going on. She had a lot of delusions. There’s a lot more people like her in cecil county. And a lot more throughout the country. I’m glad everyone got out safely. This should be a wake up call for whoever is in charge of state funding, we need more funds for mental healthcare.

is it really arson to burn your own house down?

Provided no insurance claim is filed for the fire it wouldn't be insurance fraud.
