I'm confused... did Brando penetrate her? Or he penetrated her with butter?

From what I've read it was a rape scene and in order to get the real, emotional response from the female actress they didn't tell her about it and basically went it improv. I also read that one of the female actress's complaints after the fact was not necessarily the content, but that she did not have time prepare herself emotionally as an actress for the scene and instead they just did it without her prior knowledge it was going to happen and it made her really feel as if it wasn't acting but in fact a rape.
Should say I haven't seen the scene so I don't now about penetration or anything. This is just from I've read. There seems to be no debate that it was a sexual scene though (and a sexual assault if not rape)

I saw that movie when I was 13 or so, at a friend's house. It weirded me out. I wouldn't rewatch if you paid me.

It's been well over 20 years since I've seen this movie - had to watch it for a " film in 20th C culture" class believe it or not - but I remember butter in the scene where Brando clipped the girl's nails then had her shove her fingers up his arse. Was butter featured prominately in two scenes or are all the disgusting images in that movie running together?
