This state approaches every issue from two viewpoints:
1. How can I, my family, my friends, and/or my contributors make money from this?
2. How can I get the federal government to pay for it?

If the right pocket isn’t getting lines and the feds aren’t picking up the tab, it ain’t getting done.

Phrase your request differently when talking to your state representative; say

"Either legalize recreational marijuana and sports betting OR raise property taxes. Eliminate all existing property tax exemptions, cease all grandfather clauses. Ensure that every square inch of land in Louisiana is accounted for and taxed. And that every inch is taxed fairly."

You'll have weed legalized in two seconds.

Give me sports betting NOW. I can continue to find the other from friends who make constant trips to where it is legal and acceptable.

I'm the opposite. I have a bookie. In fact, I wonder how it will affect things once we legalize sports gambling. I will probably just keep using my bookie. It's so convenient. he uses a website so I don't even have to call him. It would suck to have to get up on Saturday or Sunday mornings and drive to a casino to make my bets for the day.

I guess the key words in your post is "right pocket".

This. If sports gambling only goes to the casinos and not off-track betting and video poker joints, John Georges doesn’t get his pockets lined. Georges owns the Advocate and is one of the biggest contributors to political campaigns in the state.

If weed is legalized, sheriffs offices can’t profit from federal grants to combat weed, from the proceeds of “smells like weed” traffic stops, and civil asset forfeiture. Private prison contractors lose money too. JBE’s comes from a long line of sheriffs and is endorsed by the sheriff’s association. He’s not threatening the Sheriff gravy train that is prohibition.

Ah, yes. Another arbitrary obstacle created by the Louisiana legislature.

You would think with so many liberals in our politics that we would have already had legalized marijuana, they can't even come through with their good and popular policies!

Don't get me started on the Sheriffs! They sure do know how to frick up freedom inspiring legislation!

Even some of the Dems in the state are full on reefer madness. I'd not count on it for at least another decade or more.

What in the actual hell are you talking about?

The tax revenue from those two could fix the education system and the roads. Then anything additional would fill the holes in the other state budgets. Unlike Colorado, Louisiana would never just give money back to its constituents if a system worked that well. You'd just never hear of the success.

Some politicians would have to re-strategize their entire method of raising money for their base and voters in the middle.

Our legislature and populace is made up of complete idiots that claim to love freedom but actually just want to legislate their own morality.

Sports Betting is coming. Two years too late but it is coming.

Marijuana...not anytime soon. Probably either the 49th or 50th state. Even if the Feds declassified Louisiana wouldn't.

I owe you an apology in my eagerness to upvote you I accidentally downvoted. My sincerest apology.

No, with JBE in charge, you'd just have tax increases.

This was the same argument they used to pass the lottery, video poker, and casino gambling. Keep using it, it really works.

If only we had a couple states in the US that were already doing this that could show us what to do...
