The map attemps to show risk now, not three months ago.

If you think you have more covid risk in Roane County than you do in NYC you are a fool

This goes stricly by population, and doesnt take common sense into account. It does that for clear motives too....

Example

Country podunk county has only 5 people. 1 person has covid. This map will mark that county as extreme high risk. Truth is, places like that you never come across other people at all

This is toxic fear mongering.

You are not safe

You need to be afraid

This is unhealthy, not supported by the data, and it’s just political.

This map doesn't show "risk". It shows the probably that one person in a group of 100 may test positive.

I'm not sure I understand why people would bring up NY or other places that saw the majority of their cases months ago since the map is about today.

Not sure how complicated the map's formula may be but the I would guess it mainly works by percentages.

So, right or wrong, it's logic is that a person in a county of 10k with 100 cases the past week is in a place of 10 times greater per capita spread than someone in a county of 10 million that had 1000 cases last week.

Its fricking ridiculous is why people are complaining

Easy example

Rural town with 1000 people

20 people have covid

so 2% of the entire population

Big city with 5,000,000 people

50,000 people with covid

So 1% of the entire population

This map would have that rural town as twice as "risky". That is absurd to frame it that way

It takes scale, living conditions, etc etc out the window to push a motive

Regardless of their ultimate position, what I have learned is that most people have formed an unwaivering opinion about the virus and filter all information through that lens.

Information is rarely used to draw conclusions, but rather pre conceived opinions are used to test the veracity or reliability of information.

This is caused by both the extreme partisan nature of our society and a media that is unashamed in it's bias and lazy in performing it's primary function.

Just from a personal example:

I live in Brooklyn NY; my 79yo mother lives in the Florida panhandle.

She knew a total of 1 person who caught this in her area for months whereas I've know literally hundreds of people.

Until recently that is, she now has numerous friends with a local family member sick/positive in her small town whereas no one I know in Brooklyn has even tested positive in months.

I know it's just personal experience but I bet I'm not the only one who sees this shift happening and that's the point of the map, even if I doubt that it's overly detailed in it's formula.

Right now, out and about in Brooklyn you're just as likely to hear "I just don't think it's here that much anymore. Haven't known anyone positive since May" than anything else.

Red is also the color of danger, and they of course chose a red color palate.

It’s just propaganda.

My county risk level is....99% and...im going out to dinner

I have friends that are paralyzed with fear but i still don't know single person personally that has tested positive. Granted...i don't really ask if they are.
