Yes, New Orleans in particular had a black creole society that was racially mixed. In the antibellum era, New Orleans had by far the largest society of free people of color. Many of them were of mixed race. French men often kept a black mistress who lived in a relatively well off lifestyle. It was not a rape situation as some have implied.

There were black creoles in most of the French places, but, you're correct that New Orleans had large population and, for its size, the Natchitoches area, as well, has a large concentration of creoles to this day. They maintain at certain sense of their identity there, as opposed to New Orleans where those creoles largely blended in with all the post-bellum arrivals.
