Donald Trump is poised to sign an executive order that would create a new nuclear “Manhattan Project” designed to help the US win the global race for artificial intelligence.

The order is expected to fast track the development of nuclear power stations in the United States, which would then supply the huge data centres required for AI.

The Trump administration is seeking ways to counter the “huge resources” being deployed by China to develop the nascent technology.

Chris Wright, the US energy secretary, warned earlier this year that the clamour to build the power sources required to meet the growing need from AI had become “Manhattan Project 2”, in reference to the country’s programme to develop atomic bombs during the Second World War.

He said: “It is critical, just like Manhattan Project 1, that the United States wins this race.

“China has huge resources. They are massively focused on artificial intelligence.

“If we don’t unleash American innovation and American entrepreneurs and American construction and bold moves, we will lose Manhattan Project 2.”

The US was the first country to develop nuclear power and has 94 nuclear reactors, supplying 97 gigawatts of energy, which gives it the largest nuclear capacity in the world.

Technology companies including Microsoft and Google have embraced nuclear power as a way to meet their expanding energy needs as the US government seeks to catch up with the boom in demand.

Trump is also expected to use the Defense Production Act, which dates back to the Cold War-era, to declare a national emergency over the US’s dependence on Russia and China for enriched uranium, which is crucial for nuclear power generation.

McKinsey predicted that power demand from US data centres will rise from 178 terawatt hours per year to 606 terawatt hours by the end of this decade. South Korea produced about 595.6 terawatt hours of electricity in 2024.

Data centres will go from consuming 4.3pc of all power in the US to 11.7pc, the consultancy predicted. Demand from data centres alone is forecast to be equivalent to the entire annual output of more than 70 nuclear power plants by 2030.

A draft summary of the executive order is also said to direct government agencies to permit new nuclear facilities. The departments of energy and defence will also be required to identify federal lands and facilities that can be used for nuclear deployment.

In the US nuclear power has bipartisan support, with Democrats in favour of building new reactors because it is virtually free from carbon emissions.

By contrast Republicans are supportive of new nuclear plants as they provide a reliable source of electricity compared to intermittent energy from wind and solar power, which rely on batteries to provide a consistent supply of power.

Finally.

I never bought into alleged “green” evangelists because they ignored nuclear. It made it all feel like a grift if they just focused on solar and wind.

Nuclear power is clean, reliable, and safe if done right.

We talk about a lot of things and do none of them.

This would be a worthy project but we all know it will never happen.

This is great news for everyone. Even the liberals that don’t want it will like the final results.

I thought this was a new J-Lo flick at first glance.

Would’ve been interesting timing considering pdiddys trial.

Funny how just a week ago or so people were complaining about DOD loans to fund nuclear projects because it was done by Biden

The cognitive dissonance they possess must be world class.

Hell yeah.

The pushback against Nuclear is stupid as frick. It is one of the most efficient, best power sources we have

A recent guest on the Shawn Ryan Show talked about how China is on the moon mining Helium 3 which will be used in liquid cooling centers for AI computers.

No, they are not doing that...yet.

Although that is clearly their plan

Yeah. Seems far fetched. But the US needs to get back to dominating space.

The reason to mine Helium 3 would be for nuclear fusion

That tech isn't mature yet but when it is, that will be the most probable use case for Helium 3 mining

A tech push that can get Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Musk and OpenAI to crack fusion (essentially unlimited, carbon-free electrical power) will be the most significant leap forward for humanity since the wheel.

Maybe ever.

Targets the best universities in this country by removing federal funding and, in the case of Harvard, disallowing the world's best to come to America to study and contribute.

Shrinks the SBA making it harder for small upstart businesses to get the funding they need to make their dreams a reality.

Making every foreign laborer fear deportation.

Yeah, the actions aren't lining up with the words. I love the idea but there are too many conflicting policies/laws.

It's almost like there haven't been massive advancements in fusion technology ongoing. This is just Trump trying to sign something before the next breakthrough so he can claim credit.

And after a couple of failures (and close calls) we should have a better understanding on how to build them to minimize that.

Dont build them on earthquake fault lines, areas subject to tsunamis, but they need large volumes of water. Build them with redundancys and failsafes.

But nuclear is the best option. It can produce large amounts of power 24/7. Solar and wind cant do that.

Nuclear still faces one fundamental problem: cost.

Natural gas is so much cheaper.

If a data center is located next to a NG pipeline or NG field it would be a lot cheaper to spin a NG turbine to produce electricity.

With that said, nuclear may be a lot more attractive for data centers far from NG sources.
