A four-day search for the man suspected of fatally stabbing a physical therapist outside her 7th Ward home and stealing her car ended with his arrest at his mother’s home Friday morning.

Bryan Andry, 47, was booked on a count of second-degree murder in the slaying of 60-year-old Portia Pollock. Officers and U.S. Marshals captured Andry at his mom’s house in the 2100 block of North Miro Street, roughly a mile away from the scene of Pollock’s killing, police said in a statement.

The manhunt for Andry, who was out on reduced bail in connection with two armed robbery charges dating back to last year, was more complicated than police anticipated. As a condition of his release on bond, he was supposed to be wearing an ankle monitor that tracked his movements, but he had either removed the device, never had it, or had one that wasn’t functioning properly.

Court filings said that Andry — who has an extensive local arrest history — became the lead suspect in the case after detectives recognized him in a video from a nearby surveillance camera that showed him walking toward Pollock’s house minutes before her slaying. He also matched the eyewitness’ description of Pollock’s attacker, and two Crimestoppers tips implicated him by name, investigators wrote in the court records.

In an interview with WWL-TV on Friday, Andry's mother said her son told her "how bad he feels" before his arrest in Pollock's death. The woman, who declined to give her name, said her son was planning to turn himself over to police on Friday morning, but heavily armed officers rang her doorbell first, and Andry surrendered without resisting.

His mother apologized to Pollock's family, remarking, "I'm sorry for their loss and I'm sorry it happened."

She added, "At least he had a conscience. He was going to turn himself in."

Before Pollock’s killing, Andry had spent nearly a year behind bars on charges that he had stolen cash from a pharmacy at gunpoint and carjacked a motorist on the same day in March 2020. But he was able to post bond in February after it was reduced by the newly-elected Harris, who ran on a progressive platform in the fall and unseated incumbent Criminal District Court Judge Franz Zibilich.
