It turns out some of the police units were taking them out into the surrounding countryside and summarily executing them. Effective but not too smart when the entire world is watching what is going on there in prep for the games.

I think it is genius. People who steal are right there with people who harm children.

That is crazy. I also didn't know that Brazilians distinguished one another by color.

Unfortunately these kids have it worse than any of you realize. They are called "street kids". They are all orphans, none have a home, they just sort of band together. Recently people have been outright murdering them while they sleep. It's a horrible situation that could be fixed with someplace to house and care for them. Rio isn't interested. LINK

You serious, boss? Is the irony intentional?

There's a lot less structure and lower quality government services in a lot of these poorer countries. You thought the government was corrupt and inefficient here? Oh boy.

Right but it wasn't the police doing it until the last few years.

Kind of wished it was a video of 27 losers getting run over by Rio public transportation...

I kept hoping the next one was going to be run over by a passing bus or car.

This video represents the U.S. downtown area in twenty years IF we don't fix income inequality. We are rapidly becoming third world because, like Brazil, a growing but very small wealthy class, a diminishing middle class, and an increasing impoverished class.

Panic history. We have issues. We don't have those types of issues.

Interesting if it were true. The percentage of the population living in poverty is the same as it was (actually slightly LOWER than it was) in 1993.

No, they just redefined "poverty" to suit their own needs. Income inequality is at an all time high, and there is no need to debate it.

Impoverishment also has different definitions depending on context. The impoverished here are doing a lot better and have access to many more services than the impoverished in Lima, Rio, Port-au-Prince, etc. It's relative.

I'm not saying it isn't an issue, but a person should have some perspective about these things.
