Mythbusters did an episode on people that jumped from Bridges and why some survive and some dont. Poor Buster, on one occasion, had his metal arm sheer off on impact with the water from the force.
Basically, they agreed with what you posted. Breaking surface tension by throwing tools at the water before impact and all that was pretty pointless. Minimizing surface area upon entry was paramount to survival. Having a horseshoe up your arse helps a bunch too.
