wonder how much he could sell it for to a hacker group or someone like Elon Musk that has the resources to maybe crack it.

For the password issue maybe, but if the drive dats gets encrypted he is SOL, Musk, the NSA, FBI, no one will be able to recover it. It is the nature of the mathematics used in encryption, without the key the math cannot be “unraveled”. The FBI has warehouses full of encrypted hard drives that contain data related to criminal cases, the hope that n a decade or so supercomputers will advance to where a algorithm can be created to un-encrypt the drives.

There has got to be a way to get that info

There is...only 1 way. That password.

There is no other way.

It would be like someone robbing a bank full of gold and saying...just put the gold back. Doesnt work that away

I get it. It's all by design. It's just not a design I think is particularly useful. It's nice that Bitcoin is independent, scarce, and decentralized, but so are gold, silver, ammunition, diamonds (back off neckbeards!), etc.

The fact that he just had it written down on a piece of paper makes him the dumbest mother fricker of all time.

Probably did it when BTC wasn’t worth much so didn’t seem important. Whoopsie

50 dollars worth 6 years ago might be worth a decent bit tbh

well it pretty much is digital gold that can be converted instantly to other coins, fiat money, even stocks and precious metals.

and what you think is not particularly useful is what gives it the value. I dont find gold very useful yet I still understand why its worth what its worth.

this seems to be an issue with the OT. I dunno if its ignorance on the subject or its lack of math skills, but most on here struggle with the ability to understand you can't just hire someone to crack encryption. If that was the case, our military network would be cracked.

If you leave your house to buy a new set of tires for $1000 and you have $1000 in BTC when you leave your house it could be $950 by the time you step up to the counter to pay your bill.

Seems super easy to pay for the tires before leaving the house

So he might lose "220 million" worth of Bitcoin, so basically he will lose a perfectly good hard drive and nothing else.

Other than $220million, nope nothing else.

Would really suck for him if he actually knew the correct password and tried to type it in and just didn't press the shift key hard enough for one of the letters and now thinks it was entirely wrong and has moved in another direction.

Same here. It's on a bitcoin app but it's asking me for a 12 word recovery phrase. I vaguely remember having to do this but can't remember where I wrote it down and I've moved since then. It's probably only worth like $500 or so right now but it's the principal

Maybe he should do a password reset.

But I'm sure the company support would help him. All he has to do is ask, and maybe pay them some. Seems to be a non story.
People keep saying this, but that's not how it works.
