Are we going to include plumbing prep threads in the O/U? If so, I am going to need to adjust the line.

Whether we get snow/ice or not, this looks to be a very significant cold snap. It could be similar to, or even colder than, the arctic blast we saw around Christmas 2022.

Still a while to go, though, so things could change. Models have been consistent on the cold snap, though.

VERY COLD LOOK: As stated here many times, there is no skill at a specific weather forecast beyond 7-10 days, but there is skill at pattern recognition. And, global models are all suggesting a very cold look for the eastern half of the U.S. in the January 7-15 time frame.

A few important notes...

*At first glance, the cold wave looks similar to the one we experienced in December 2022, when single digit lows were seen over the northern half of Alabama. But there is a chance this airmass might be even colder as we are seeing analogs to January 1977 and 1982. showing up.

*The pattern does actually look favorable for some type of winter precipitation across the southern U.S. at some point, but there is absolutely no way of knowing when or if it happens right now. You will see the usual array of "model snow maps" across social media from deterministic model runs; these mean nothing beyond 7-10 days. But a winter storm of some type is a very real possibility along the way.

So... plan on some very cold by mid-January. Stay tuned.

No way to predict any precipitation this far out, but most meteorologists agree a
pretty big arctic airmass will settle over the eastern half of the country.

I’d like to request enough winter weather on Jan 16/17 so I can cancel a work trip to Atlanta.

Aren’t the models predicting precipitation this far out now? Yes they are.

The question is how reliable are their predictions this far out, and we know the predictions aren’t reliable.
