Contemplating a move to Portland, ME for work. I have been to Maine before (summer), and it was awesome. This would just be for a couple years. I'm sure it will be cold as hell during the winter, and I'm a soft Louisiana boy, but I'm still very tempted. Am I dumb for even considering this? I come to the OT for its brutal honesty.

Winters are brutal. Had a friend move up there for work and did not enjoy it.
Summers looked nice though

This is like the fifth thread about Maine that has been on the OT lately. Are people just discovering that it is a state?

What is this? Are we naming states?

I've always wondered how bad it really is. Do you just get used to it and it isn't that bad? Or, is it truly nothing but continuous misery?

Demographics will be much different from Louisiana

Colder, actually
I would do it in a heartbeat, Portland is great. But I like cold weather.

People can either do winter or they can't, hard to know until you actually spend a full winter in a place like Portland. Get used to single digits in the AM. Snow is pretty until you are looking at the same snow that fell in Dec in mid Feb along with the mounds and mounds of dirty grey snow oiled everywhere.

Know a few people that live in Maine and they all absolutely love it. But they’re not from the south and were used to harsh winters. If it’s only a couple of years, go for it.

The winter really isn’t that bad on the coast.
It doesn’t get into the single digits all that often on the coast.

I lived in the Bangor area for five years, so have a good ideas about the winters. First few years were okay. After 4 or 5 years I started to get a little depressed as winter set in.
Two years? That would be easy and probably fun if you get out in the winter and ice fish, ski, etc.
Some things I hated; 1) get your ice legs; slipped on the ice a couple times and landed on my back gasping, 2) if you have a house shoveling a driveway is very difficult, and you may need to pay to have it done, 3) many houses still use oil heat, which is expensive, 4) prepare to be bundled up; it is often necessary., 5) expect holidays to be very different, my kids went trick or treating in the snow one year and looked for Easter eggs over the ice.

Portland, ME
I have a bunch of friends who live there and I visit at least a few times a year.
Downtown Portland has a ton of great bars and restaurants. Portland (and that general area) also have some amazing breweries (e.g. Bissell Brothers).
However, on my last trip (a couple of months ago) I noticed that Portland has had a huge influx of hipsters and had somewhat of a Williamsburg (Brooklyn) vibe. So if that's not your scene, you're probably going to hate it.
As for the weather, if you hate the cold/snow, you're going to be miserable. A good portion of the late Fall and early Spring are cold, snowy, and miserable (if you don't like winter sports). So, yeah, the Summers are great up there, but the other three seasons won't be great if you hate cold, dark, wet weather.

I lived in Colorado, but it was a dry cold. Snow gets old, and I understand that. Not a fan of hipsters though.
