Macy’s, J.C.Penney accept that it’s Amazon’s world and they just live in it

LA Times - Consumer Column
First the good news: The Commerce Department reported last week that consumers went shopping in July. Retail sales rose 0.7%, after a 0.3% gain in June.
This is important because consumer spending accounts for about two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, so what’s good for retailers is literally good for America.
Now the not-so-good news. Major retailers such as Macy’s and J.C. Penney reported some dismal quarterly numbers, suggesting that things may not be as upbeat as the Commerce Department would have us believe.

Reinvention is the watchword for department stores. Some, such as Kohl’s, are inviting crowd pleasers like fitness clubs and yoga studios to share their space. Others, such as Nordstrom, are experimenting with micro-stores that don’t even sell things — they’re designed to promote online sales.
Macy’s and Penney both announced last week that they’re partnering with a company called ThredUp, which sells second-hand women’s duds. Yes, two of the most prominent names in retailing are getting into the used-clothing business. That’s what it’s come to.

Things aren’t “upbeat” for Macy and Penney because they were too late in changing business philosophy to meet what the market wants.
That is called competition in capitalism

Macy’s and JC Penny both have an online presence.
Most consumers don’t know that.

That's because when you do a search for a product on google the top results are generally Amazon.

Macy’s always has online sales as well. Shipping isn’t Amazon Prime fast but not horribly slow either. Usually free shipping if you spend at least $50.
Plus...you can easily return any online items at the closest Macy’s location. Makes it easy to shop for clothes online and return the items that you don’t like after they arrive and you try them on. I do this all the time.

The Kohl's in the town near me has an Amazon Prime dropoff that sends any prime item back for free. They must have teamed up with them, but I'm not sure to what effect.

Nah, this website messes up way too much to be owned by Amazon

Is Amazon buying Kohls for store presence? I see Kohls is now accepting Amazon returns and that seems to be what all their commercials are now.

WSJ had a story on Nordstrom's yesterday. Apparently it is struggling, which is disturbing because it defines quality and customer service.

Macy's is higher than JCP but can't compete with Nordstrom
It has nothing to offer
TBH it's fair to ask if we really need anything between Kohls level and Nordstrom as far as physical locations.

Probably that shirt I bought last month. I never go to the mall.
I just don't see the benefit of buying clothes online. Can't try on the shite, I don't see the point other than something you're looking for not being in the store.

Sears and Macy's are struggling even more.
Those department stores have high overhead costs with massive amounts of square feet - mostly tied to a dying "indoor shopping mall" retail concept. Nordstrom just happens to be in better malls and has fewer locations.
Nordstrom isn't any better with online retail.
