I watched an interesting documentary on this very subject not that long ago. I can't remember everything but pretty much the 'fat is bad' and 'sugar is bad' came from two different reports/studies about the same time. The AHA jumped on the fat is bad train and then in the 80s you started to see all the 'fat free' stuff popping up everywhere. Since fat free pretty much tastes like crap, they had to 'help' the flavors along....with the addition of sugars. We have WAY more obese people today than we had back then.
