Does his later in life transgressions detract from his accomplishments at LSU? Should being a felon disqualify him from being memorialized with a statue? What sayeth the OT?

quote:

LSU will unveil a statue of the late Dr. Billy Cannon, the school's only Heisman Trophy winner, just outside Tiger Stadium on Sept. 28 — one night before the Tigers' Southeastern Conference matchup with Ole Miss. The statue, which was made possible through donations to the Tiger Athletic Foundation, will commemorate the accomplishments of the most heralded football player in school history. It was unanimously approved by the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame Committee in August 2017.

quote:

Cannon led LSU to the 1958 national title and the following year won the Heisman as the nation's top collegian. Cannon, who remains LSU's only recipient of the Heisman, had his No. 20 jersey retired by the university in 1959. “It’s fitting that Dr. Cannon will be the first and, so far, only football player at LSU immortalized in this way,” athletic director Joe Alleva said in a university news release. “He and the 1958 team helped put LSU football on the map as a national powerhouse.”

As long as the statue is not counterfeit I do not see a problem with it

More statues of old white men. Ugh.

We need to end this white privilege!

That's pretty cool.

BTW, do any Bama fans know how progress is going on our Bernie Madoff statue?

I believe it should. I know he was a good man who made some bad decisions, but his legend is tainted in my opinion. This teaches our youth that it doesn't matter if you're a felon as long as you're good at a game.

Oh ffs. So he counterfeited some bills. It’s a victimless crime. Build the damn statue.

As an alum this is embarrassing that LSU would enshrine a known criminal like this

He was human, made mistakes and paid his debt to society and then some. If you are going to judge the man beyond his LSU career then you should acknowledge the good things he did with the bad everyone harps on. There's obvious ulterior motives and bitterness by some posters here.

No, not at all. It detracts from his overall legacy, but really has nothing to do with his LSU accomplishments.

I'm happy Dr Cannon reformed his life, but there are hundreds of formers players and coaches I'd rather see LSU honor.

They should make the statue in a confederate uniform and watch the SJW heads explode.

No other player at LSU has accomplished what he did so that would just be your personal preference I guess.

It’s a matter of opinion.

I respect what Cannon did on the football field but I would rather a statue of Jerry Stovall or Tommy Casanova than him.

cannon committed victimless crimes. he didnt murder anyone or molest children.

he should be honored for what he did as a player and for the program.

It's very possible those two will get one as well. All 3 numbers are retired.
