Well how about including ALL races in that discussion, and ALL genders, and ALL backgrounds.

I dont get why its always black vs. white. There are tons of other races that Im sure would have a gripe as well.

Why aren't they picketing?

quote:

While at LSU I experienced being stopped by LSUPD while jogging around the lakes bc "a report was made of a suspicious black man running buy the sorority houses". Are these too events comparable? Not hardly...I don't know if white students were frequently stopped on campus and asked to see their student ID to verify they went there but I know I was.

If you're not doing anything wrong, then why is it a big deal?

There are lots of similar cases of profiling that are based on LOTS of different things.

For example, I ALWAYS get carded any time I go anywhere because of how young I look, and there are even times where I have been given jUNIOR discounts on things.

Or people will even talk to me like I'm much younger, and it comes across very wrong.

Its the EXACT same thing.

Some people might get eyed by police just because they have tattoos, or because they wear certain clothes REGARDLESS of race. You know this to be true.

How do you stereotype a girl who wears really skanky clothes? Do you assume she's DTF? I bet you do in some respects. If she's not at all, then that could be considered REALLY offensive.

The point is, people NEED to make baseline judgments from which to operate, and while they may not always be favorable to everyone, they CAN be changed easily.

It becomes an issue when the baseline judgment is not being changed DESPITE persistent contradictory experiences.

Was your ID checked more than once? Maybe its a product of what THAT guy did. It wasn't about YOU being black, it was because HE (the possible perpetrator) that you were checked.

In fact, you could have seen that as a great positive because you proved the police wrong, that a black man is in fact just innocently running around the track. Wouldn't you want to be that guy to break the stereotype? Dont you think after the police stop enough innocent black men that they would eventually stop assuming time and time again that they have cause to be suspicious?

Sure as shite bet they would. What a stupid waste of resources if they didn't change their approach.

Just like middle easterners. They hate being stereotyped at airports and such, but its because of someone else that they're being stereotyped. Eventually, after enough checks, and enough of nothing is documented, they will stop using their time and effort to profile someone based on middle eastern origin, and theyll look to something more specific.

You should be mad at the idiots who keep putting the cops under the impression that a black person is something to potentially be suspicious about given certain circumstances.

I would give no fricks if they stopped me. They could check and see that Im one less person for them to worry about. You certainly did the same, so be glad you helped chip away at a stereotype.

Nowhere. There was absolutely no lack of safety

It was fun being a white male in a white pick up back in 2002.

In that incident I WAS the "possible perpetrator" the police had a description of me down to what I was wearing with no crime. Told me a female called and made a report that "a suspicious guy is running around the sorority houses". I assume I spooked some soroity girl while working out....they checked my ID apologized and stated they get reports like that fairly often. It wasn't a completely unpleasant experience but when it occurs over and over and you talk to your friends who experience the same thing it can become frustrating.

"If you didn't do any thing wrong what the problem" The repeated inconvenience becomes tiresome. If I'm on campus after a certain time, or driving, or running...so yes I can "be mad at the idiots who keep the cops under the impression that a black person is something to potentially be suspicious" i also can be frustrated the person who looks at me and makes the assumption i'm up to no good and made the call.

I agree that there are multiple different stereotypes and burdens we all must live with. That is in line with the point i was making earlier that everyone's experiences in life are valid. Things happen to a lot of people for a lot of different reasons, and sometimes things happen to me bc im black ....i've accepted it. its ok for others to do the same lol

Okay. Either way, that's not your fault. Sorority girls (hell, lots of girls in general) are strangely really sensitive to that stuff. They act like every guy is looking at them 24/7.

Reminds me of going to the gym, where it seems like just walking near a girl warrants their suspicion. I fricking walk around them as much as I want, and I beg them to say something to me. I've been going to that gym for quite awhile, and I do the same shite every time . Just because they're at the gym, doesn't mean Im going to change things.

I'm sorry it inconveniences you that often. I think it'll happen less and less as time goes on. I feel the EXACT same way when people ask me about how young I look. I have a college degree, I have a job, and I feel like I know whats going on in current events...or whatever is supposed to be an indicator of age...Im not sure, but it still happens.

Btw, I'm saying this with a "Im with you" tone, not a "don't cry because i get it too" tone.

I got you! and i wasn't looking for a shoulder to cry on bc the police pick on me lol I've been called a "baby killer" for wearing my military uniform and a N*%@#r too my face...I have thick skin. Just using that situation as an example of the different experiences people may have at the same school.

I appreciate all the points made and agree with most of this thread. I think what's happening at MU is BS and has been handled wrong on many fronts. My reason for responding to this thread was to give another perspective of the LSU students who gathered to pray and stand in solidarity for the people caught up in the situation and to address some of the negative comments directed at them earlier in the post.

frick that. If any of these people have a brain and read through all the reports and make their own interpretations they'd see this is the biggest sham in the history of shams.

The whole thing is an abortion and I'd do anything I could to distance myself from anything coming from that shitty university in Missouri
