I have been in my current relationship for almost three years. I’m a young woman, 41, have a great, stable career and make about $100,000 a year. I am ambitious and my prospects have me increasing my income by $10,000 every year. I have about $140,000 in savings, and no debt. I am close to closing on a home, which will be completely financed by me.

My girlfriend, 38, works a few gig-type jobs that she loves and makes $50,000 a year. She has very little in savings and about $20,000 in student loans, and isn’t in the position to buy or help with a down payment, closing costs, etc. She lives paycheck to paycheck, pretty much, and as she loves what she does, isn’t motivated to do anything else to make more.

quote:

Given all this, I need help figuring out what’s fair for the prenup and for our living situation. For the prenup, I was thinking that we include no spousal support or alimony, no sharing of retirement accounts or contributions made during the marriage, and everyone’s debt incurred during the marriage is their own. The new house and mortgage will be in my name alone. Whatever she contributes to the mortgage will be reimbursed if I ever sell the house — but not if we get a divorce. Also, she will be reimbursed for contributions toward capital improvements.

Is this feminism in 2022? I don't see this marriage lasting very long.

What are her concerns? Her partner is making above average in Louisiana.

They should not get married. For the people who do marry a prenup is fair. She has spelled out that her partner is not carrying her weight financially.

This is only really interesting because it involves two women. If the lower income partner were a man they probably wouldn't marry. If the lower income partner were a woman people would try to shame the man into not demanding a prenup.

That was the first thing I noticed.

She's already living in denial.

The “male” clearly is the one who wrote this. Good job, good income, great financial position. “Partner” is the moocher lacking ambition and significant stable income.

That's a problem right there.

Everything else is probably fine. Also, it humors me that this thread has people saying that one spouse making $100k and one spouse making $50k is a problem. I'm inclined to think that both the total of $150k and the 2:1 earnings ratio is as good or better than the overwhelming majority of people on this board

I don’t disagree with some of her other implications at face value but this seems petty. If her ex-wife has to move out if they divorce, and has contributed to the mortgage at some point, then she should be reimbursed for that if the ex isn’t going to sell IMO.

That all said, it’s amazing to me the couples that don’t talk about these things before marriage. Like REALLY talk about them. You can’t tell me she didn’t know this chick had the job she had and lived the way she did before considering marriage.

End of thread next.

PS Successful girl will be with a man and married by the time she’s 45.

No, it's women finally getting a taste of what it's been like to be a man for the last 100 years
