Tough loss - always is. They just don't live long enough, which is to say forever.

But good for you for taking care of her responsibly all the way through to the end.

It’s an awful pain. Had my girl from college until midlife. Could hardly function when we had to do it. In my experience, only a new puppy helps. Contacted a breeder we’d previously spoken to (before our girl got sick), and she had just had a litter that week. I reserved a little guy with the same colors as my girl (different breed) and picked him up two months later. Getting the house ready, then training him kept me really present and helped the wound close.

I feel for you. You can never be ready to say goodbye. Dogs are just so loving and innocent.

lost one of mine a few months ago. It didn't really hit me until I got home and she wasn't in the window watching for me to get home.

A wise old redneck once told me after putting down my dog " The reason dogs don't live as long as we do is so we can have more of them in our lives"

I'll never forget that statement and I've shared it a bunch.

We put our 15 year Golden to sleep a few months ago. The other day I was buying a tag for our other dog and talking to the adoption people, telling them about how we adopted her from them in 2006 and started tearing up and getting emotional. It's rough.

Ain't nothing worse than burying a lifelong family pet. Sorry for your loss man.

We lost both of ours within the past few months. One was 15, the other 12. When our kids were little, they were terrified of my ‘big idiot’- he was a chow mix that acted like a puppy, but he was bigger (and dumber) than they were, so they stayed outside or in our climate controlled garage or outside. This past winter, they became inside dogs because it got too cold for the heaters to keep up in the garage.

Once they became inside dogs, my kids learned to love them, and now our house is empty because we don’t have them. We’re looking forward to adopting a new dog (or 2) again soon.
