Yeah, this is the worst part. Seeing his food and water bowl that I just filled up. My flip flops by the door for bringing him outside to use the bathroom. His collar. His favorite treats in the pantry that I had fed him last night.

My condolences.
We lost our dog of 14 years earlier this summer while we were on vacation. The dog sitter said she just didn't wake up. It hit home once we returned and the house was so quite without her.
It will get better because all I remember now is the good times we had and there were a lot of them.
I am hoping this is how my 12 year old Great Dane goes. I’ve had to put one down and with her dying breath she pulled her head onto my lap and licked my hand

1st. Sorry for your loss
2nd. How awesome where those 13 years? Wouldn’t 13 more be equally as awesome?

Sorry for your loss. I have an 18-year-old and a 15-year-old. Hope you take solace in good memories.

Had a black lab for 11 years that got hit looking for food in trash cans by the highway. My fault for letting her roam. It was a Sat. and had to call the vet in after work hours. The vet and I stitched her up, 115 stitches I believe. He said she would make it but the next 48 hrs would be crucial. She survived. We nursed her back to health. I had a pup from her that I would hunt with when she no longer could. One day months after the accident I picked up the puppy to go hunting and the mom looked at me like it was the last, in retrospect. Came back home and she was gone. Never will forget the way she looked at me when I took her daughter with me.

Youre missing out on a helluva lot, but it's not your fault, you're just not wired that way for emotion or connection

Sorry for your loss. Hounds are the GOAT. Have a beagle who is going on 15.. dreading when I get to that point with her. Hoping she will somehow let me know when she’s ready

Some wires are crossed I think.

So sorry, shutter.

Sorry for your loss. I still think about my 11 year old lab who died peacefully in his sleep just a few months ago.

I hate these threads (or the situation more specifically). So sorry. One of the worst things ever. Dogs are so special.

He was a good boy. Dealing with the impermanence of life never gets easier and it’s amazing how much we can love the little guys. You will love the next one too.

One of my favorite stories from a vet. A 6 year old explained to him why dogs don’t live as long as humans:
quote:
"People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life - like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?"
The six-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

I bet he was a good boy. I’m so sorry.
May he forever eat bacon treats.
