This area is very nice and safe with great schools, but probably an hour from Scott AFB.

On the Missouri side, the area around Arnold is okay and about 30-40mins from Scott. It is more of a Blue Collar area than West County.

Anyone here know the best places to live on the Illinois side?

Any reason to live on the IL side? Are you buying or renting? And where is your job located?

If you are buying there is absolutely no reason to live on the Illinois side. The property taxes alone are enough to choke an elephant. The only thing better about the IL side is their road maintenance which is superb by comparison.

If you're renting any of the Illinois towns mentioned would be good. Generally speaking anything outside the 270-255 loop will be safe and freer of the riff raff.

Welcome to the area! St. Louis city gives the region a bad rap. It's a great place to live with nice people.

Brooklyn/Madison dividing street used to be lined with whorehouses. The cops patrolled only to enforce establishments getting paid when a patron yelled that he was robbed

No but it has been named the No. 1 in the U.S. for murders per capita.

Baton Rouge No. 6 and New Orleans No. 7 FWIW.

Watch out for being double taxed if you live in Illinois and work in St. Louis. West County in St. Louis is still nice (Webster, etc).

Scott AFB is my next and last assignment... I'd prefer to find a place on the MO side but the commutes seem to be quite long once you find a place where newer houses are around $300k or less.

My sister lives in Edwardsville and it’s very nice. It has a Mayberry look and feel to it. She lived on the MO side before in Saint Charles and it was nice but Edwardsville is better IMO but not sure about taxes or anything.

Plenty of decent areas around Scott AFB. O’Fallon, Edwardsville, and parts of Belleville are nice. Good salt of the earth people too.

Tornado alley though. Make sure you have a shelter or a basement.

Yep. I stayed in Belleville for 2 years while building Prarie state energy complex and never had any issue.

Chesterfield/Wildwood

Really expensive area and it’s probably an hour commute? Eureka is maybe 10 miles away from Chesterfield/Wildwood and in the same school district. Fenton, also; you can find houses under $300K in both communities, The commute from these areas would be awful, though. Then again, I lived 16 miles from my Baton Rouge office and it was not unusual to take an hour or more to get there.
