Looking for a hero type book. Specifically, a book where there's some type of character improvement, whether it be honing fighting skills, magical powers, or a little of both. So, obviously in the fantasy genre is where I'm interested. I just want a great story of a person who has reached his potential...

Just read the saddest damn book of my life, so I need a pumper.

To clarify,:

I read HP forever ago. I've read the Kingkiller Chronicles, and the book with Logen Ninefingers. Can't remember the name.

As always, appreciate your insight, OT.

Start the Kingkiller series by P.Rothfuss. There's only 2 books and they're very quick reads. The 3rd and final one will come out in like a year I think.

The Wheel of Time series (14 books though)
Blood Song (Anthony Ryan)
Assassin's Apprentice (Hobb)
The Way of Kings (Sanderson)
Dune (Herbert)

All are books about heroes with character improvement.

I really hope people are suggesting books where the hero has an epic rise and a tragic collapse.

The complete antithesis of a sunshine pumper.

Dune is one of the greatest fictional hero stories ever written. Herbert is kind of a tough read with all the detail he involves but its worth it. The Eyes of the Dragon by stephen king also a good hero tale.

Wheel of Time. Long read at 14 books, each over 700 pages, but well worth the investment. The first book is also very good by itself. You will definitely see the main characters progress throughout the story, becoming deadlier and deadlier.

Read the Eragon series, all four of them. It's a great journey and almost exclusively about his rise from a farm boy to a dragon rider, shade slayer, and king killer; discovering latent powers as he going on a journey three ways across a continent and to an ancient isle that protects the souls of dragons.
