Start the Kingkiller series by P.Rothfuss.

I quit halfway through the first book when he jumps off the roof - not a spoiler because no context provided. I got so pissed at that scene that I said screw it and moved on.

The Joe Ledger Series or The Harry Dresden Series.

I enjoyed both.

ETA: I second Mistborn. May also want to consider the Iron Druid Series

Read the Eragon series, all four of them.

I read the first 3 but never read the last one. Is it worth it? Very, very few fantasy series provide a satisfying conclusion. I have probably read over 20 fantasy series and I can think of less than a handful that was worth finishing to the end.

The Wheel of Time series (14 books though)
Blood Song (Anthony Ryan)
Assassin's Apprentice (Hobb)
The Way of Kings (Sanderson)
Dune (Herbert)

I read WOT, Assassin's Apprentice (all 6 books or however many are in the 2 separate series), and all of the Herbert Dune books. I am waiting for Sanderson to finish the entire Way of Kings series before I start the first one, though I am not a fan of his writing style.

However, I have never heard of Blood Song. Is that new? What series would you compare it to?

Loved this book, but did not care for the others in the series.

I think so, yes. It closes out the storylines cleanly and reasonably. The ending left me feeling good about the story.

Off To Be The Wizard.

Its light. Bout a guy that discovers a file that can control his "stats" and uses it to go back in time to Medieval England to become a Wizard. It'll make you laugh, and there's a trilogy with more to come if you enjoy it.

Louis L'Amour- The Walking Drum

quote:

Warrior, lover, and scholar, Kerbouchard is a daring seeker of knowledge and fortune bound on a journey of enormous challenge, danger, and revenge. Across Europe, over the Russian steppes, and through the Byzantine wonders of Constantinople, Kerbouchard is thrust into the treacheries, passions, violence, and dazzling wonders of a magnificent time.

From castle to slave galley, from sword-racked battlefields to a princess’s secret chamber, and ultimately, to the impregnable fortress of the Valley of Assassins, The Walking Drum is a powerful adventure in an ancient world that you will find every bit as riveting as Louis L’Amour’s stories of the American West.

If your looking for a gradual increase of power over the course of a long series, The Dresden Files is where its at. What I love most about the Dresden Files its not just Harry's ability with magic that has grown throughout the series, but his reputation. He pulls off so much crazy stuff and survives against things he has no business surviving that all the bad guys start to take notice and want no part of him. He's a prodigious wizard, perhaps the most talented of his generation, but he's still young (for a wizard) and very very human, yet all the things that go bump in the night stay the hell out of Chicago because of his reputation.

If you're wanting to read some great non-fiction stories, I like:

"The Spirit of Saint Louis" by Charles Lindbergh

and

"The Lost Explorer" by Conrad Anker
